Finding ways to cope with grief

It can be hard to cope with all of the emotions that grief can bring. Here are some ways to help you with the loss of someone close to you.

Let your feelings out

It's ok to feel sad, angry, upset and hurt. You may feel like this for a while, or these feelings might come and go. Remember, feeling happy and laughing are still ok too.

It's ok to cry

Crying can help you to let go of all of those feelings inside. It's ok to find a quiet or special place to go to if you don’t want anyone to see you cry.

Talk to someone you trust

It can help to talk about how you are feeling and what you are going through. You could talk to a family member, friend, teacher, or counsellor at Kids Helpline.

It's ok if you don't want to talk about it!

You could try things like drawing, reading, writing a poem or making up a song about how you feel. Do something you enjoy or try running or jumping to get those feelings out.

Saying goodbye

Saying goodbye to someone you love can help. Some ways to say goodbye are going to a funeral, writing a letter or sending a message off in a balloon. You could also write a poem or song to say goodbye.

Keeping their memory

When someone dies, it doesn't mean that we forget them. It can be nice to do things that help keep their memory. Carry a photo of them with you or talk to others about what you miss about them.

Make a memory box

Make a special box and fill it with photos of the person you lost and things that remind you of them or that belong to them. Write notes of your favourite memories together and place them in the box too.
