I struggled with suicide and homelessness

,

My name is Nash. I’m 19. I love football, country music and my dog. I’m also a proud Torres Strait Islander!

I started experiencing mental health challenges in my early teen years. I was bullied at school and started to self-harm. I thought that males were meant to bottle things up and I didn’t show any emotions.

I know it's really hard and tough to seek help

,

I just wanted to express my thoughts and for someone to listen to me and to not fix me. Kids Helpline did that. I was really grateful how they were able to listen to me and yet helped me process what I was going through. I tried Kids Helpline because they were directed towards young people and were more youth-friendly than some other services. When I was talking with Kids Helpline I felt more comfortable and okay with my problems. They were not solved per se but I felt that they weren't as debilitating.

I got really homesick and used to cry myself to sleep

,

I moved to Australia to study here. I'd never lived away from home. I left all my friends and family behind. I was so sad but also really excited. At first I was really homesick and I cried myself to sleep most nights. Things here were different to what I had at home. I eventually adapted to being around new people and made some new friends through joining a University sports team.

I met other students from overseas and we stuck by and helped each other.

Now I have life long friends and I know we'll always keep in touch even if I move away again.
