NEVER give up on your dreams

,

It was the scariest thing ever. I took a home pregnancy test thinking it was going to be negative, thinking I won't be pregnant. It could never happen to me. Thinking I can't be. I went to the doctor to get tested and found out I was already 12 weeks pregnant! I had been in denial that it could never happen to me. Being pregnant and having to tell my parents was the hardest thing, especially since I had just moved to another state to live with my Dad.

Being emotionally abused at home was really tough

,

I never found myself being able to break free. I had a fake smile and was always shy. No one knew what my life was like and that I hid a dark side.

I logged on to Kids Helpline and it was kind of easy to share my feelings.

My counsellor suggested many great things to help me. I have learned to not let negative thoughts take over your life, but to break out of the bubble and find someone that you trust to talk to.

It's good knowing I'll get better eventually!

,

I mean sure, everyone has mood swings and hormonal moods. But I knew mine weren't just my hormones. One week I'd be extremely low and contemplating suicide. I didn't see a better life ahead. I had made many attempts to end my life because I was so low.

I'd have my normal days where I could just relax and sleep was normal. I'd focus moderately better and my behaviour was heaps better.

There are people I can talk to

,

I would constantly argue with my Mum & her husband about small silly things. I would often cry myself to sleep knowing the next day would be the same drama, different day. It sucked a lot. I felt like I had no one to turn to, no one to talk to, no one to trust. Basically I had no one. I counted down the days until I turned 18 so I was an adult & no one could boss me around. I longed for that day but it seemed so far away. Just when I thought things were going to be fine, things went downhill again.

Abuse at home

,

My Dad used to slap me, scream at me and call me names. Life was pointless. No one liked me at school. I always had bruises on my arms and legs. My teacher asked me about it once and I lied and told her that it was from falling over. I was scared to go home. I never wanted any of my friends over at my house because of all the stuff that happened.

My life wouldn't be as calm as it is now

,

I finally got the courage to go on web counselling at Kids Helpline and then I was encouraged to call them. So I did. It was hard at first but then it got easy. My counsellor asked what had been going on for me and it took a while for me to tell her but I got there in the end. I told her that I had been sexually assaulted by a couple of people, but the main person was my ex-best friend.

I was an average teenager who wanted to be more 'fun'

,

After a while it all got out of control. Eventually I made things worse for myself because I was getting so drunk I had no control over what I was doing. I was making mistakes that made me feel worse about myself. My silly solution to make things better and give me confidence to handle social situations was to drink more. Everyone began to know me as a 'party animal’, and 'getting messy' was my thing. Of course the drinking didn't fix anything and when my problems remained I got even more down on myself.

It has helped me so much with day to day life

,

I went on a diet but it soon turned horribly wrong. I stopped eating around others and I started to restrict everything that I ate. I started to feel really bad and only ate dinner each day even though I was doing so much exercise with my Irish dancing, gymnastics and school work.

I then had to move schools and that was so sad as I had to leave my good friends. I am a very shy person - it was so hard for me to make new friends at the new school. This added to the stress in my life and my eating went from bad to worse. We had to do an assignment at school on eating disorders.

I needed to show that I was stronger.

,

At the age of 15 my family was falling apart. I tried sharing it with my two closest friends and instead of being there for me they decided to tell the rest of the school. I shut down, I didn't go to school unless I was forced to. I started self harming and stealing alcohol from my mother's cupboard. At the age of 16, I started smoking pot. Then I met someone who was a little older and they made me realise that I didn't need pot to be happy.

They really helped me get my confidence back

,

Most of my friends had boyfriends and we were always going out to parties. That's where I met my boyfriend. He was a year older than me and we got on really well. That was until I got pregnant at age 15.

All my friends including my boyfriend were all very supportive.

I was starting to feel slightly depressed about the situation and that's when I started calling Kids Helpline. They really helped me get my confidence back and 9 months later I had my beautiful baby boy. I am 17 and still call Kids Helpline.
